Telehealth more commonly referred to as Telemedicine has emerged to become a source for specialized delivery of healthcare to a large patient population. As telehealth becomes more widely practiced, there is now sufficient need to cover the murky nuances that often impede delivery of effective telehealth services. The Joint Commission established credentialing compliance standards for practitioners of remotely located telehealth practitioners with maintenance of the privileging requirement under the medical provider. What this means is the hospital or outpatient facility, HMO, PPO, etc., is responsible for maintaining regulatory compliance regarding credentialing and privileging of remote telehealth practitioners. Under the auspices of the HITECH Act, HIPAA compliance standards inclusively involve the IT framework managing the video conferencing telecommunications networking environment that links the practitioner and the patient.
